Where is Svalbard?
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean located about 1,000 km north of mainland Norway. The largest island is called Spitzbergen and the main city is called Longyearbyen.
Do I need to bring my passport?
Yes. You need to bring your passport even if you are a Norwegian or an EU citizen.
What is the weather like?
In summer, average temperatures are usually between -3°C and -10°C / 27°F-14 °F. Technically, Svalbard is an Arctic dessert, and summers are usually clear and perpetually sunlit, but it does rain/sleet from time to time, and storms can be harsh. So be come prepared for anything.
In winter, temperatures are usually between −15°C and −30°C / 0°F and -20°F. The winter on Svalbard us normally dry and cold with ferocious storms starting in October.
What do I need to bring?
If you are joining a single day trek, we recommend a good pair of boots and a warm jacket.
If you are joining a multi day trek or a course, you need to bring your own basic equipment. See the list here.
What can I buy in town?
There are several well-stocked outdoor outlets where you can purchase all common brands of equipment, provisions and fuel you will need. In addition, there is a single well-stocked super market, where you can purchase food and goods. If in doubt about the availability of something you need, do not hesitate to ask.
